Belmont Stakes
Belmont Stakes contenders and Belmont Stakes odds to win are listed below as we are only 11 days away from the final leg of the 2011 Triple Crown in Elmont, New York at Belmont Park. I don’t know about the rest of you but I have never been beat up this bad over a Triple Crown season before in my life!
The Belmont Stakes can’t come fast enough so that I can put this 2011 Triple Crown season behind me and I am sure you all feel the same as I do, it has been miserable but look at us… We are all still supporting the sport and still here talking horses, that says something! Probably not good but oh well… heheheh
I don’t care what anyone says (don’t often do) but this is one of the best 3yo crops we have had in a long time, problem is we had a string of injuries hit hard and fast early in the year and we still haven’t recovered. 2nd place finisher in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in 2010? Anyone? Boys At Tosconova was second but injured and not heard from since, I was disgusted to see some company that claims they offer horses to list him as Boys of Tuscanova – I mean come on, really? Then we also had Premier Pegasus who tore up Santa Anita and could have been the Kentucky Derby favorite if he didn’t get injured. Let’s not forget Uncle Mo, absolutely embarrassed the field in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in 2010, had surgery over the winter, then got sick before the Gotham and we have yet to see him run as well as he did as a 2yo.
I know that every year we lose some horses to injury and we all really hope it’s simply some rest and time away from racing for a big comeback just in time for the Breeders’ Cup or as a 4yo the following year. But this year we lost the very best horses which doesn’t happen very often if ever.
Looking at the Belmont Stakes it’s hard to pick a winner. Can Animal Kingdom or Shackleford win the rubber match and go two for three this Triple Crown? Can Mucho Macho Man grow into that big body and finally keep all his shoes on now that he is using the synthetic custom molded shoes? Can Nehro who if he ran in the Preakness would have likely won using those speed figures posted come in on good rest and blow away the competition in the Belmont? Or Will Awesome Patriot or one of the new comers make it three different horses to win each of the Triple Crown events this year with a Belmont Stakes win? It’s too far out to say but I think the safe bet is the horse that win’s the Belmont Stakes will not be Animal Kingdom or Shackleford!
As for this year’s crop of 3 year olds, give them time and remember they are still just a bunch of punk kids growing into their shoes. Let’s see how many come back from injury and if they can match their previous form before we write them off.
