Kentucky Derby Odds
Kentucky Derby odds are always changing, from morning line odds to future wagers on Kentucky Derby odds to win, it’s never simple even at the easiest of times. I had someone ask me if they should place a future wager on odds to win the Kentucky Derby? My answer to them was simply, no! They are not only new to the sport but quite frankly are still trying to figure out what half of the exotics names are and how to Key a horse. If you are one of these people then please listen to my advice, save your money and spend it on the May 6th for the Kentucky Oaks or May 7th for the Kentucky Derby, it will be far more fun placing your bet on the day of the event and getting full track odds rather than a fixed price on a future.
For the veteran players, we know there are at least a dozen methods/formulas for betting futures of any form/event and if you know this then you really don’t need to waste your time reading this article.
If you insist on placing future wager bets on Kentucky Derby odds and really aren’t sure what you are doing then here is some advice for you that will hopefully keep you from making rookie mistakes and give you a fighting chance.
Get a good line! Already this year I have looked at lines that offer no value at all and are simply sportsbooks trying to offer Kentucky Derby odds and really have no clue what they are doing! They might be the biggest or best for lines on the NFL (too bad there likely won’t be a season this year) but they honestly have no clue what it takes to book wagers on horses. There are three companies that I trust and have played with frequently over the years and you can do well by betting at any of the three since they offer great value and all have generally the same prices/odds. Wynn sportsbook and casino, USRacing and Lucky’s sportsbook. Wynn is like old faithful, it’s always there, does a good job and will never let you down. Lucky’s is a newer player compared to Wynn but they also do a good job and both are my recommendations to bet horses in Vegas, especially Wynn if I want to place some bigger action. If you can’t make it to Vegas then I would check out USRacing who operate online with the same or better odds than Wynn and Lucky’s but also offer far more props, futures and cash rebates up to 8% for your racebook wagers win or lose.
If you are going to Las Vegas or Churchill Downs for May 7th then know the lines ahead of time and what the prices are on the horses you are looking at betting, this way you can see which way the line is moving to help you make an informed decision placing your bet.

Here are the three simplest ways to approach betting on futures.
1) Make a couple big bets on the favorites. This is like putting all your eggs into one basket, not my way to play but you get to cheer for the favorite, don’t have to work too hard to justify your pick if you are at the track since most everyone else will tell you theirs and on the biggest races like the Triple Crown have a tendency to come in.
2) Spread it around on the mid priced horses. This is how I generally bet my futures, takes a little more time, effort and knowledge but pays better too! If you sorted the odds listed above you would see there are 18 horses priced between 15-1 and 45-1 with horses such as Mucho Macho Man, Toby’s Corner, Pants On Fire, Midnight Interlude, Nehro, Anthony’s Cross, Astrology and Shackleford all listed with a ton of value.
3) Zero in on one favorite and hedge your bet on a few mid priced horses. If you really like a horse then go with your gut, the only bad decision is indecision! But at the same time take some of your money that you budgeted for the race and grab a couple other horses with some value as it never hurts to have a backup plan.
If you are looking for something a little more fun, a little less directly horses and still being part of the action look at the Kentucky Derby Prop wagers, here is an example of a few I have come across, click here USRacing | Online Horse Betting to see their full list of props and futures.
