INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) – Jeranimo rallied down the stretch for an upset win in the $300,000 Shoemaker Mile while Camp Victory took the Triple Bend Handicap Saturday at Betfair Hollywood Park.
Jeranimo’s victory, his third in four starts at Hollywood, earned an automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita in November.
Under Garrett Gomez, the six-year-old ran the six furlongs in 1:33.97 to win by 1 1/4 lengths. Jeranimo paid $19.60, $8.40 and $4.
Earlier, Camp Victory ran the seven furlongs in 1:22.75 to beat The Factor by 3 1/4 lengths. The win came a day after Camp Victory’s trainer Mike Mitchell underwent successful surgery to remove a brain tumor.
Mitchell, who notched his 2,596th career victory, watched the race from the intensive care unit at USC Medical Center.
Camp Victory paid $22.60, $7 and $3.60.
