Veteran Santa Anita Paddock Guard John Shear, 90, was injured Saturday, March 12, 2011 as he threw himself in front of a young girl in order to protect her from a loose horse, prior to the running of the third race. Sea and Sage, readying for the upcoming race, wheeled, freeing himself from his handler and sprinted towards the opening and colided with Shear. Shear remained conscious, responsive and was moving when he wad taken to a Pasadena hospital for further evaluation and the horse was uninjured. Benoit Photo
