War of Will

War of Will

When Gary Barber’s War of Will heads postward in the Belmont Stakes, he will be the only horse to have run in all three legs of this year’s Triple Crown this year. The son of War Front, who finished eighth in the Kentucky Derby but was elevated to seventh after the disqualification of Maximum Security and actually was involved in the incident resulting in the disqualification and possibly most bothered by it, doesn’t appear to have suffered much during the grueling Triple Crown campaign. He’s trained forwardly since and has looked exceptionally well at Keeneland all spring.

Trainer Mark Casse, who sends out War of Will as his first Belmont starter, has decided the colt is fit enough so he won’t have an officially timed work before the Belmont and it’s hard to second-guess a trainer with his credentials. Should War of Will win, he will become the 13th horse to have lost the Derby but win the Preakness and Belmont. Jockey Tyler Gaffalione, who arguably has had a breakout year, will be making his Belmont Stakes debut on this colt, who will probably be the morning line favorite. Also, the 12-furlong distance of the race seems to be well within this colt’s capability.

War of Will arrived at Belmont Park on Monday and hit “Big Sandy” for the first time on Tuesday.
