Derek’s Derby Dozen: February 27, 2017

Proving that the Janet Jackson’s question “what have you done for me lately?” resonates with bettors, McCracken, recent winner of the Sam F. Davis (GIII) at Tampa Bay Downs, closed as the favorite individual horse in Churchill Downs’ Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 3.

Yet, he failed to crack my “Derby Dozen” list, which rates the top contenders for the 2017 Kentucky Derby on the basis of their Perceived Ability Ratings, or PAR.

Three horses that did move up in my rankings since the last time I published this list were Mo Town — despite a horrible three-year-old debut that casts even more doubt on the strength of last year’s Remsen (GII) — along with Southwest Stakes victor One Liner and the undefeated Japanese horse Epicharis (who didn’t make my top 12, but is one to keep an eye on).
