Gold Dream is an established veteran star dirt horse in Japan, where he has racked up nine career wins and earnings equal to nearly $6 million in races ranging from one mile to 1 ¼ miles, all on the dirt.
Gold Dream has won a trio of local Grade 1s in 2018-19, but his last open Grade 1 win came in the 2017 Champions Cup (formerly the Japan Cup Dirt), which marked the height of his career.
He was sent off favored in last fall’s Champions Cup, and seemed to be nearly back to his old self when rumbling down the center of the track from off the pace to just miss by a neck behind Chrysoberyl, who is also on his way to the Saudi Cup from Japan.
Gold Dream will be making his 7-year-old debut in the Saudi Cup. After his promising placing in the Champions Cup, however, he since seemed to take a step backward in his only race since then. He is coming off of a disappointing loss last time out in the Tokyo Daishoten (G1) in December, where he finished fourth at 1 ¼ miles.
“He’s trained well since and everything’s gone according to plan, with this race always being the target for him,” said trainer Osamu Hirata through a translator. “I think he’s suited to a course with quite a long homestretch, and hopefully things will go well for him and he’ll get to run his best race.”

“Missed by a neck to fellow Japan star Chrysoberyl as favorite in Grade 1; give both a second look.” – Ed McNamara
“Gold Dream is a veteran that has performed at a high level on dirt in Japan for several years. Gold Dream’s best days might be behind him, but before you count him out note that he did manage to just narrowly miss a repeat Champions Cup win in November in a race run at the Saudi Cup distance of 1 1/8 miles. If there is a hot pace, the race could set up well for this closer.” – Noel Michaels.
Notes: Osamu Hirata has trained the winners of 20 Japan graded stakes winners since 2010, including Curren Black Hill, who won multiple stakes for Hirata from 2012-2015. Since 2016, Hirata has won eight graded stakes races, with seven of those wins attributed to Gold Dream … Gold Dream’s regular rider has been Christophe-Patrice Lemaire, who took over aboard the horse in 2018 and has been aboard three of the horse’s local Grade 1 wins. … Gold Dream was also ridden by Ryan Moore, who was aboard his biggest career victory in the 2017 Champions Cup (G1) … Owner Katsumi Yoshida campaigns a large Japan-based stable that also includes stakes winner Tetradrachm.
